Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn internationals, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.
Munster lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
