FAI Approves Motion Calling for European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has given the green light to present a official proposal to European football's governing body, calling for the banning of Israel from continental club and international tournaments.

Basis of the Proposed Ban

This motion, which was put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, highlighted alleged breaches by the IFA of two key European football regulations.

  • Failure to implement and enforce an proper anti-racism policy.
  • Organisation of football teams in disputed territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.

Ballot Results and Next Steps

According to an announcement from the FAI, the resolution was supported by 74 votes, with 7 opposed and two not voting.

The association plans to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the immediate suspension of the IFA from European tournaments.

During a special assembly of the FAI, an standard motion was put to members. It passed by a large margin.

Earlier European Deliberations

Uefa had earlier paused intentions to ban Israeli football at the close of last month, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the region.

Although Uefa never officially confirmed contemplating an special session on the issue, preparations were believed to be quite advanced.

International Context

The FAI resolution comes after comparable demands in last autumn from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for Israel's suspension from global football.

Those requests were made after UN specialists urged Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, citing a UN investigation that accused the country of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.

The Israeli government has rejected these claims and labeled the report as outrageous.

Possible Consequences

If European football's authority decide to ban Israel, it would likely create tension with the US administration – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an action.

Even though Uefa has the power to exclude Israel or its clubs from its tournaments, it might not be able to stop them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which falls under world football's governing body.
