His attorney stated he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for several factors including that his the accused, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
The former director was indicted shortly after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they planned to present various petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was improperly designated to assume control of the legal matter.
James Comey's case was originally handled by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from the former president after his investigation into an additional political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
The former director seemed in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration terminated.
Upon hearing to the magistrate read his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.
Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the period, the director was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director caused a backlash from Democrats when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government assert the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the upper house by stating he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations details about the government examinations.
Legal representatives also charge Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
In a video Mr Comey posted to his social media after he was accused, he declared he was not guilty and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"Our household have understood for considerable time that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a trial."
The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on digital channels demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and other people.
